Q: Why can’t I place annotations on top of existing annotations on the page?
A: Based on feedback from users, in version 11 the annotation tool behavior was changed to allow existing annotations to be edited while the annotation tool is active. When hovering over an existing annotation, the cursor is changed to edit mode so you can move / edit existing annotations on the page. This means that new annotations can not be placed on top of an existing annotation because the cursor will now be in editing mode. This behavior is more consistent with most other applications as it allows you to adjust the placement of the annotations if needed after it has been placed.
However, there may be situations or use cases that require the ability to overlap annotations and so this is an optional feature that can be disabled at anytime through preferences.
How to Enable Drawing Overlapping Annotations
By default PDF Studio will be set to prevent drawing overlapping annotations. If you wish to revert back to the old behavior you can do so by following the instructions below.
- Go to Edit -> Preferences
- Select the Comments panel
- Uncheck the option “Allow drawing overlapping annotations”
- Click OK to apply the changes and they will be immediate
